My Wednesday from Hell

This morning I prepared myself for a long day even though I had a bad feeling about it.  My morning started out actually great, I woke up in a wonderful refreshing mood and got dressed for work earlier than normal.  While driving to work with the window down enjoying the beautiful weather I keep telling myself to think positive about my day.  I already knew the evening before that I was going to be working with a doctor I really don’t like working with and I would not be able mostly likely to get to leave for school.  You see she is a older doctor and she does like change or moving at a fast pace.  I am very energetic and I don’t like moving at a slow pace. Once arriving and getting my station set up for surgery I then got the bad news.  I found out my patient had not arrived yet and there phone number was unreachable so I had no way of getting in touch with them.  I then looked to see if my doctor had arrived so I could tell her the news and she was nowhere to be found.  Come to find out she was late as well. I could see that my day was going to be very stressful from this point on.  After everyone involved in the surgery finally arrived we then was able to begin our day.  I had several cases to do and all of them were going to take a long time to complete. I was so happy that we finally got to start and all the equipment was working properly. About half was through the day I saw that I was going to be working late even though I tried to hurry the process up but I could already see that there was no chance of me getting off in time to go to school. I knew that this situation today at work was going to make me very upset because I hate being late and stressed out all day.  I really don’t like to be late to school because I feel like I am wasting my money when I have to pay out of pocket for my classes. Unfortunately after all the cases were complete  it was indeed too late for me to attend my classes so I decided to go home, take a nice hot shower , relax for a few minutes and go straight to bed.  Hopefully my day tomorrow will be better.

My horrible black eye

My weekend was so planned out for last Saturday, a day with my friends and cooking out.  Saturday morning I got up ready for a day of fun.  I got dressed and out the door I went, not know what my day would come to. After arriving to my friend’s house we began to plan our meal for the day and getting all the supplies.  Once all that was done and we got freshen up for our friends to arrive, the cookout could then began.  Once the cookout began we started playing some games on the WII.  We were all drinking and having fun until I got hit in the eye by the remote controller.  I could not get mad because I was just an accident but it hurt like crazy.  Everyone then stopped what they were doing to make sure I was ok but my eye was immediately turning red and started to swell. My friend felt so bad that she had hit me and then ran into the kitchen to get some ice.  I placed the ice on my eye but it was still throbbing.  I didn’t want to take any medicine because I didn’t want to mix the medicine with alcohol.  I knew that would not be an answer to my problem so all I could do is wait and hope the ice would help.  I then decided that I needed to just go lie down and relax with my ice pack for a while.  The next morning when I woke up, I just prayed to myself on the way to the mirror that it would not be black.  Guess what it was, my whole eyelid and even underneath was a little.   I was cussing to myself, I could not go outside and to work with a black eye.  I was so embarrassed on my way home because everybody was staring at me as if I had gotten beaten up.  This sucks!  After getting home and applying ice for a while longer, I saw then that it was not getting any better.   I was so relieved that I looked into my makeup bag for some help and found a brown shadow for my eye’s so I could cover it up.  I was so happy after applying my cover up because it did a great job. So everyday this weekend I have had to reapply several times throughout the day to ensure my black eye was not noticeable.  I was so relieved to work all week and nobody has even noticed. This morning when I woke up and looked and my eye was almost back to normal. Thank God because this had been the longest week of my life.

Spring Break

I am so excited that I am back in school and I can finally say “I am on spring break!”  Even though I don’t go on vacation I do try to enjoy myself.  Although, usually when I hear the words spring break that means I am working overtime and not relaxing at all.  I work at a pediatric dental office and we are very busy during the days that children are out of school.  I had so many things planned with my family and friends, even though I still had to work during the day.  I have been back in school now for three semesters and really don’t have a life during the week besides going to school and work. I was so ready to not have any classes, homework or quizzes.  The first few days went by so fast because I actually got a full day at work and I didn’t have to leave early to go to school.  By Friday morning my plans were made for the weekend. My friends and family had planned a very exciting event. On the morning of March 9, 2012, I had only planned on only working a few hours and being off between 10 and 11 o’clock that morning but things then changed.  I received a call around 11:30 a.m. from my mother saying that my grandfather was being transported to the emergency room and I needed to get there as soon as possible. My mom sounded nervous because my grandfather has many medical issues.  You see my big plan for this weekend was attending his 86th birthday party and now the family is headed to the emergency room.  I was so scared driving there because I knew my grandmother (who is 85 years old and hardly ever drives) was the only one there with him and she had to drive him.  Then I thought OMG my grandmother hasn’t driven a car in a long time. I was so thankful to be only a few minutes away.   Once arriving to the emergency room and getting triage by the nurse, we then immediately straight back for the exam by the doctor.  A doctor and nurse came into the room to check my grandfather’s blood pressure and oxygen levels.  At the time of his initial check, his oxygen level was a little low and his fingers and toes were numb and he was very pale. The nurse was concerned because of his history of high blood pressure, fluid problems and a pacemaker.  Several blood test and heart test were then performed. After several hours of waiting and being monitored the doctor, finally came in with the results.  Come to find out my grandfather was going to be ok; he was just a little dehydrated and needed some fluids.  Our family was so relieved because we had received good news that everything would be ok and we would be able to continue with his party. Along with his family and some of his friends attending the party, I could see how much better he was. I was so thankful he was ok to see his 86th birthday.

Algebra Class

When I started back to school I was a little worried because I had to learn how to study again.  Well so far I have taken one class on line and it was ok, but I thought I would have learned more by being in class participating with others. Now moving on to my frustration regarding the way the professor is teaching my algebra class, I never thought I would learn more by doing my homework online than in class.  My professor is so confusing.  The other day I had a question regarding a problem he was explaining and I had no idea what he was talking about, he was confusing me by going back and forth between problems.  I then ask him to please explain another problem, hoping the problem would be similar to what we were working on. So Instead of giving the class another simple problem that we could understand he gave us a problem with fractions and decimals.  I was thinking to myself, what is he doing? If I could not understand the simple problem that was given initially, what would make him think I could understand problems with fractions and decimals in them?  I was so upset because I really didn’t understand what was going on and our test was going to be the following week.  I feel like I should have a different professor or even taken the class online. It makes me so upset that I have to leave work early every week to go to class, pay all this money and then end up not learning a thing while I am there.  It is too late now to drop the class but I guess from now on I need to look a week ahead of my homework so maybe I can understand a little more in class. I know that next semester I will definitely look on the list of professors for the classes I will be taking and ask around to other students how they rate the professor for that class.  I hope to never have to go through another class feeling like I do in this one. It’s hard enough learning how to be a productive student. Maybe next semester will be better.

What are his thoughts?

As I sit here looking at a photo of a gentleman dressed in a large bright yellow outfit with what it looks like feathers attached, I wondered why he was dressed this way.  I wonder what kind of statement he was trying to make.  He is standing proud in front of a home that looked to be abandoned and torn into pieces. While dressed in what looked like to be some type of cultural outfit. I do believe he is from some type of Indian tribe because of how he was featured. His attire was a long robe and a headband of some sort made with bright feathers and lots of designs. Which most likely representing the tribe that he belongs. He looked as if he does not care if people are staring or complementing on his features because this is what he believes in by representing his heritage.

Then I ask why he was here at this home?   It looks as if he is here to represent a family member, or something that may have occurred or something that may be becoming at this home.   One will never know what happen to make him stand before this home dressed like this by looking at the picture, but realize that whatever has occurred or what will be occurring.  He will always be standing proud for the family or tribe not matter what. You can tell that he is very proud by the way he stands, by standing straight and tall with his arms open proudly.

People come from many different nationalities, religions and have many types’ heritages in the world.  They all represent them in some of the same ways but most of them are in completely different ways.  The most important to me would be representing your family and standing up for what’s right.  It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that love of a family heritage and culture continues to grow stronger and stronger.

A terrible day at work

Wednesday is usually my favorite day of the week at work because I know my week is half over and I get to work in the operating room for the rest of the week.  Well this morning, I woke up at 5:30 got dressed and out the door I went in a great mood.  Once arriving to my office to gather my things and drinking my morning energy drink, I then thought it was going to be good day. After getting to the hospital and preparing for surgery it all changed.  The patient had arrived on time but without any of the paperwork needed to have surgery.  After calling and texting my doctor for thirty minutes with no response I then began to get very concerned.  Once reaching my doctor she then informed me she was on the other line and did not want to click over.  I could feel my blood pressure rising immediately. She finally got to the hospital after running forty-five minutes late herself and this time I was beginning to be very upset and mad. We then had to get all the consents and clearance paperwork in order so surgery would not have to be cancelled. Finally the surgery began and the procedure was now started, we were ready to take x-rays. After taking the x-rays, they were then sent down to be processed and developed as quickly as possible. Once the x-rays were developed and returned to the room, we realized the machine was broken and the films were unable to read.  I immediately got really mad and upset because nothing at all was going right and I wasn’t even eight-thirty yet.  I had to retake the x-rays and send them for reprocessing in the hope that the machine would come back on and work. Finally we were able to read them and could continue the procedure.  Two and a half hours later the procedure was complete and we could finally end the case.  Everyone was so happy the case was done but we still had another case to go.  The second case went a lot smoother for all of us but it ended up being a long terrible day.  First the patient forgot there paperwork, then the doctor was late and finally the x-ray machine had broken.  Today was a very stressful day which normally is a very relaxing day for me. I hope my day tomorrow is a lot better and my blood pressure can remain normal because I love to work in operating room.

Super Bowl Sunday

February 5, 2012

Super Bowl Sunday is the most prestigious day of the year for many football players and fans here in the United States.  This year the battle was between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots.  I love to watch football so it was going to be an exciting day for me.  On Saturday morning I started planning what the festivities where going to be for the game.  My friends and I started gathering up the list for the food and beverages, so we could prepare for the number of guests that were going to attend our small party.

On the morning of the super bowl we had all got up and met for a wonderful breakfast and plan our day.  We had a few hours before we had to start the preparations.  We went over our menu once again to make sure we didn’t forget any of the important appetizers.  Some of my personal favorites included hot wings, spicy rotel cheese dip, barbequed cocktail wieners, vegetable trays and chips. Once all the food was prepared and the refreshments were chilled we sat down to go over everything to make sure nothing was left out.

Around five o’clock our friends had started to arrive so we could soon begin the pre-game celebrating.  My boyfriend was pulling for New England but I wanted the Giants to win.  I could already see that the night was going to be very interesting and a lot of aggravating would be taking place.  That’s what fans always do while a championship game is going on though.  Once six thirty arrived it was time for the kick-off.  The game began and my friends and I were having a blast.  The Giant’s started off great but the Patriots ended up winning the first half.  I was not very happy but having a good time but that’s what it all about.  The score was 10-9 and the Patriots scored by a touchdown.  The half time show was next and we all were looking forward to seeing what Madonna was going to be wearing and what she was going to sing.  I thought she looked very nice but it looked as if she was just lip singing. Although everyone at the party thought the performance sounded great. All of the show during half time was interesting.  Now that the second half had started it was really getting to be a great game and the score in the third quarter is now 17-15 Patriots.  My boyfriend kept saying see I told you the Patriots was going to win. At the end of the fourth quarter I really thought they were  to win but the Giant’s came back and got a touchdown and made the score 21-17.  The Giant’s won the 2012 Super Bowl.

My weekend with Jenna

My weekend started off with my niece’s eight and under basketball game.  It’s so fun to watch this age group play. Like my niece, it’s the first year playing, and most of the team doesn’t really understand the fundamentals of the game. They usually just pick the ball up and run, no dribbling. They have not yet learned all the basic fundamentals of basketball. So needless to say the referee gets to blow the whistle a lot during these games.  This was the last game of the year that I would get to watch so she told me I needed to be there.  It was a good game, they actually scored some points.  The final score of the game ended up being 15 to 8.  Jenna’s team won.  It was an exciting game for her and I was so proud of her hard work.  After the game, she and I went to our grandmother’s house to get ready to go to a birthday party at my friend’s house.  I could see it was going to be an exciting day for the both of us because I really don’t get to spend a lot of one on one time with her.  On the way to the party she was getting a little nervous because she didn’t know any of the kids that were going to be there.  When arriving to the party she quickly became friends with two of the girls there named Lundyn and Giselle.  The girls had a great time playing together during the party.  It was wonderful seeing them having fun. After opening gifts and eating cake and ice cream it was time to go. She was a little irritated that it was time to leave because she wanted to stay and play with new friends. I had to convince her that the party was over and everyone was leaving.  She instantly smiled and told me “thanks Aunt Abecca for taking me to the party I had a great time and I love you”.  So we then left to go meet her Nana before going home, not knowing Nana wanted to go shopping. She was so happy that she was going to her two favorite places, Wal-Mart and Hobby Lobby.  She was so tired by the time we finally go home from first a basketball game, a birthday party and then shopping with Nana for a few hours.  She immediately wanted to take a bath and go straight to bed.  It was a wonderful day with her.

Just about me

Hi, my name is Rebecca Young and I am thirty-five years old.  I moved from a small town called Pine Log several years ago to here in Cartersville, Georgia.  I am employed at the Children’s Dental Center in Cartersville. I have worked in the dental field for the past ten years but for the past five years I have be trained and I am now a multifaceted dental assistant at a pediatric office.  I also work as an operating room dental assistant for both Cartersville Medical Center located here in Cartersville and Floyd Medical Center located in Rome, Georgia.  It is very exciting, because I get to work in a different atmosphere almost every day and I never really know what I’m going to be doing from week to week.

After work I attend Georgia Highlands College in the evenings.  When I am not attending school two evenings a week I am mostly likely trying to relax, even though I don’t get to very much.  I also hope to enroll into the nursing program soon. So that means there is no rest or relaxation in my life, mostly only homework and studying for the next few years. I didn’t realize starting back to school after so long would be so hard but as an adult working full time and going to school you have found a way to make it work.

Usually on the weekend is when I finally get some relaxation but not for long.  I try to spend at least of the days of the weekend with my niece and nephew.  I love spending time holding my nephew and riding the tractor with my niece. I also enjoy spending time with my parents and friends.  My boyfriend and I don’t really get to spend a lot of time together but when we do we love to just stay home and watch television.  Some of our most favorite shows include NCIS, Law and Order Special Victims Unit and Two and a half Men.  As you can see I have a very busy life but I try to enjoy every minute to the fullest.

How the economy has changed my life

Although I have not been affected by the economy like a lot of other people, it
has opened my eyes in many ways.  I was able to maintain my job and living
arrangements but I saw that changes needed to be made in my life.
When I was growing up and learning responsibilities of having a job, I never realized
that one day it may change. I always thought “hey, you can always go get a second job
to make it”! Now you are lucky if you can find any job opportunities but fortunately, I
have been able to maintain my job for the last 5 years, which I am very thankful
for. Even after many of the incentives had been taken that is needed to make it.  I
then open my eyes to see that there are many people having hard times, by losing
everything that you could imagine. Including jobs, personal belongings and even place
to sleep. Then I saw that chance to make it better for me and my family. I then
decided to make a move forward by continuing my education.  So last semester I made
that big step and enrolled in my first semester back in college.  I can’t say it’s
been easy because it has been very hard. I still remain working full time and attend
school in the evenings.  Learning how to study again was my biggest fear, but I know
in my heart I can do it.

No matter how bad the economy has been, it’s never too late to further your
education. You will never be too old to learn.  It will only get better for you and
your future.  Soon I hope to receive my degree as a registered nurse.  Good luck to
everyone who decides to make a change.
